Some people conduct research with professors to build their resumes, and some work at campus facilities to make a couple extra dollars. So, is it worth it? Well, it depends. Regardless of what the on-campus job is, working part time is a big commitment. You have to put your coursework, exams, and extracurricular activities aside for a couple of hours each week. Because of this, it might not be for everyoneâ€"some majors and courses are more tedious than others. However, if you have nothing better to do, go for it! I personally really like my on-campus jobs. Regardless, there are several things to consider before you try to apply for them. What type of employment is it? The kind of job you work should be a big factor in deciding whether the job is worth it or not. Types of jobs can range from being a desk worker for a certain college to a tutor for a course. I currently work two jobs at Illinoisâ€"Im an admissions blogger and assist in international admissions. I love doing both, but neither are directly connected to the career path I want to pursue after college. Nonetheless, this doesnt really matter to me right nowâ€"I have the time. However, you might not always be able to afford the luxury of time. Courses only get harder and more time-consuming, especially as you enter your junior or senior year. Most of the upperclassmen that I know who have on-campus jobs work in positions directly related to their career fieldâ€"either in research groups or in specific offices/departments. If it pays, how well? Time is money. A lot of the jobs on campus are minimum wageâ€"will this be enough for you? Im not a big spender, so even minimum wage is more than enough for me. However, if youre more liberal with what you use your money on, the wage and number of hours youll work is a factor worth considering. Will you be happy? This is perhaps the biggest piece of advice I can give: No amount of money is worth your mental health or happiness. The coursework of college alone is hard. It may be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel at a lot of different times (especially during finals), and working a job that you hate will do anything but make that situation better. No amount of money would persuade me to take a job that would make me hate waking up in the morning. Even though I spend a large portion of my week at work, I dont mindâ€"I love what I do, and it makes me happy. Going into work is never a bother for me, even if its during exam season. Dont let an on-campus job be an extra challenge for your mental health. Working a part-time on-campus job is great, but, all things considered, it might not be for everyone. Remember, youre at school to study. If you have the time and energy to spare, go for it, but dont sacrifice precious study time to make a couple extra dollars. For many, language is the biggest barrier to understanding Shakespeare. As a way of trying to counter this natural anxiety, we often begin by telling new students or performers that speaking Shakespeare aloud isn’t like learning a new language –it’s more like listening to a strong accent and your ear soon adjusts to the new dialect. Even if you are confused about some words and phrases, you should still be able to pick up meaning from the context and the visual signals you receive from the speaker. The same is true of Shakespeare and the best antidote for Shakespearaphobia is to sit back, relax and listen to the text spoken and performed. General Theory Of Alcoholism There are many theories of alcoholism, and some approaches explain and treat certain alcoholics better than others. One of the common themes throughout the readings is that addicts display a range of personal and situational problems. There is no typical addicted personality or emotional problem (Allen, 1996). Because of these facts, it comes as no surprise that there are also no typical assessment or treatment for these individuals. For instance, a medical/disease model of alcoholism may be more useful to some alcoholics than others. The point is that instead of rigidly applying one model, a counselors goal is to use the models that are most effective to the particular alcoholic in question. A primary thesis is that the way we construe alcoholism highly determines the way we diagnose, treat, and feel about alcoholism. Therefore, it is important for us to clearly and consciously know our own personal views (theories, beliefs, assumptions, expectations) toward drinking and addiction. I believe that each one of us hold theories about alcoholism which may be more or less helpful and/or harmful. For example, if we view an alcoholic only as one who is on skid row, frequently drunk, out of control, and blatantly disruptive and embarrassing, then our theory of alcoholism must be modified for successful assessment and treatment. Although such a view does include some alcoholics, it excludes most of them and therefore precludes helping them. Instead of one alcoholism, I have come to believe that there are many alcoholisms. And as reflected in the referenced readings, instead of one theory, there are many theories and treatments. This is rather frightening to the new MSW! How will I know? Through the years, I have pieced together a general theory of alcoholism. First, alcoholics are more or less obsessed with the thoughts of drinking (manifested in idle thinking, dreams, fantasies, intrusive thoughts, and concrete plans). Alcoholics look forward to drinking, think about and give reasons for not drinking, justify their drinking, lie about and hide their drinking, or think about the comfort of drinking. Simply put: A lot of thought is given to drinking. Furthermore, the promise of drinking in the near future helps alcoholics to relax in the present, and conversely the thought of not being able to drink for an indefinite time evokes anxiety and subtle sadness. Non-alcoholics simple do not think this way. Alcoholics feel compelled to use alcohol as a means of effecting changes in mood, thinking, or over-all well-being. They feel a desire that drives them to use alcohol to achieve contentment, to affect a buzz, to reduce tension, to numb feeling, to forget, to relax, to reward, and to feel better. And, their pleasant feelings reinforce the compulsion to use again. Why are some people compelled to drink alcoholically, while others are not? No one knows for sure. There are many ways to explain alcoholism. Some approaches accent organic/genetic/biochemical factors, others emphasize non-organic/psychogenic/environmental factors, and others try to integrate both nature and nurture. Depending on the person, there can be many reasons (and combinations thereof) to feel compelled to drink such as genetics, biochemistry, habit, stress mismanagement, expectations, environmental pressure, cultural and societal sanctions, etc. One drink can compel some alcoholics to drink until they pass out or get sick. For them, one drink is too many. Other alcoholics feel compelled to drink daily while managing to function without blatant disruption. About 175,000 allied troops landed on June 6th, the day that got to be known as D-day. The allied forces landed in Normandy, on Tuesday, 6 June 1944, beginning at 6:30 in the morning of British time. The two main operations on D-day were known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord. D-Day was the name that was used for the day of Normandy landing, which was not approved formally of. The code name given to the famous Allied raid of France planned for June 1944, was Operation Overlord. The commander-in-chief of Operation Overlord was General Dwight Eisenhower. Other leading commanders for Overlord included Air Marshall Leigh-Mallory, Air Marshall Tedder, Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery and Admiral Bertram Ramsey. Operation Overlord required the sort of logistical issues that no armed forces or military had ever had to manage. The most important preparation was for the Allies to have landed an immense amount of both men and equipment by the end of D-Day itself. The preparation and logistics behind Operation Overlord were beyond comparison in United States history. The Allies had to guarantee that no part of the entire plan was leaked, as it was very valuable and above all, the desire to fool the Germans was at a great height. Many large ships and aircrafts, supported by means of enemy warships, crossed the English Channel following dozens of minesweepers and traps. Most of the allied forces equipment, and warships arrived off the beaches prior to the crack of dawn. Three different divisions of paratroopers consisted of two American and one British, had previously been dropped locally. After a brief assault by ships and guns, soldiers of six special divisions three American, two British, and one Canadian, stormed ashore in five main beach landing areas, named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Following many tough fights, in particular the one on Omaha Beach, by the end of the day, traction had been very well established. As the German counterattacks did not get through as they have expected, the Allies poured men and materials into France to take an advantage. Towards the end of July, reinforcements and steady battles made it possible for a getaway from the Normandy outskirts. An additional landing, in southern France in the middle of August, helped facilitate the liberation of France. While the Soviets were coming from the east, Hitlers army was pushed away, occasionally haltingly and constantly bloodily, back en route for their native soil. Mel and Kel had always been close amongst our circle of friends and naturally know one ever suspected that either of them were outfitted for a lesbian lifestyle, at least not both of them. It was during that unforgettable summer that their other lifestyle would become vividly clear to the rest of us. The majority of us openly embraced their relationship and undoubtedly respected their audacity to endure the resentment and unacceptance that they may possibly confront one day. But, it was not until two years later that Mel and Kel would challenge their friends’ opinions again, only this time concerning a much more controversial issue. Apparently over the course of the two-year relationship that Mel and Kel had spent together, a commitment had developed between them that only few of us could possibly fathom. They were convinced that the unconditional devotion they shared was worthy of a unique union, and that this devotedness they shared would endure for a lifetime.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In a Utopian society most of us would rejoice in knowing that two people such as Mel and Kel who care so deeply for one another, have found each other and are willing to spend the rest of their lives together. I believe it is through the values and ethics they will carry through life. Most lessons are learned from the family who one is raised in, while others may be learned from peers or society in general. My own values are a mixture of all those along with the experiences I have had throughout my lifetime. Having overcome many obstacles in my own life, helping others find ways to overcome their own obstacles has long been a goal of mine. My objective in getting my degree in Human Services is to help the most vulnerable of society, children. As a child, I often wished I had somebody who would understand and†¦show more content†¦This caused me to look outside the family for acceptance, bringing me both happiness and misery. As a child, school became the place where I felt I was able to achieve and I would strive to do my best for the inner satisfaction it provided, and for the attention I was able to re ceive from my teachers. Knowing that my mother would not care whether my grades were good or not, I never felt I was reaching my academic goals for her sake, but for an unattainable goal that would make me feel accomplished. This result never came, and my early adulthood was spent consuming drugs and living a solitary existence. Never having been shown how to grow up and live like an adult, I struggled with this process for too long. In order to figure out whom I was and who I was going to be, I separated from my family for many years. Although many of these years were a struggle, I eventually grew up and accepted myself for whom I am and have taught myself new behaviors. As a mother, I recognize the importance of providing my daughter with love and acceptance that will allow her to develop a high level of self-esteem to help her mature into a functioning adult.
